A diesel engine that idles normally but gradually loses power during sustained load does not automatically have a high-pressure fuel-system fault.

One upstream component that is often overlooked is the fuel-tank ventilation system.

As fuel leaves the tank, air must enter to replace the lost volume. If that air path becomes restricted, vacuum can progressively build inside the tank.

Why the Fault Can Be Time-Dependent

The basic relationship is:

Fuel consumed → Tank volume increases → Vent admits replacement air

If vent flow is restricted:

Fuel demand continues → Tank vacuum rises → Supply resistance increases → Feed pressure falls

At idle, fuel demand may remain low enough that the restriction produces little noticeable effect.

During sustained engine load, the same vent restriction can become much more important.

This is why the complaint may follow a pattern such as:

normal start → normal acceleration → prolonged load → gradual power loss

Measure the Supply Side, Not Just Rail Pressure

Useful diagnostic evidence may include:

  • low-pressure fuel supply;
  • inlet restriction or vacuum;
  • tank condition;
  • vent and cap condition;
  • symptom timing;
  • comparison between short and prolonged load.

The important question is whether fuel restriction begins before or after the filter.

Why a New Fuel Filter May Not Change the Symptom

A clean filter reduces restriction at the element.

It cannot correct a tank that cannot admit enough replacement air.

Repeated filter replacement may therefore leave the same sustained-load complaint unchanged.

Use Operating Duration as Diagnostic Evidence

A fault that becomes stronger only after several minutes can help separate a slowly developing vacuum condition from an immediate mechanical or electrical failure.

Yes. Idle fuel demand may be low enough that the restriction is not yet severe.
