Some diesel engines use injector sleeves or cups to separate the injector from coolant, fuel or cylinder-head passages.

Failure of this interface can create unusual cross-system symptoms.

The Sleeve Is a Boundary Component

Depending on engine design, the sleeve may separate:

combustion chamber

from

fuel or coolant passages.

A loss of sealing integrity can therefore move gas or fluid between systems that should remain isolated.

Why Aeration Can Appear Without a Suction Leak

If combustion gas enters a fuel passage:

engine fires → cylinder pressure rises → gas crosses failed interface → fuel becomes aerated.

The resulting bubbles may initially be mistaken for suction-side air ingress.

Use Operating-State Evidence

A useful distinction is whether aeration:

  • appears during cranking;
  • increases after combustion begins;
  • changes with cylinder load.

If bubbles increase only after firing, a combustion-pressure source becomes more relevant.
